A Closer Look: Iraq War 2003 with Sean Smith

Marking the tenth anniversary of start of the Iraq War 2003, meet award-winning war photographer Sean Smith for this special tour.

Smith's photographs, taken to document the conflict for The Guardian, are currently on display at IWM North. This tour offers the chance to find out more about Smith's experiences in Iraq before, during and after the outbreak of war, on visits between 2003-2008.

Redeye and Open Eye are very pleased to present an evening with Eva Stenram.

Eva Stenram is a London-based visual artist who sees photography as a medium of inconstancy and transformation. Incorporating digitally manipulated photographs, found photographs and images from the Internet, her work comments on our complex relationship with the photographic image, our relationship with surveillance culture and our relationship with privacy. Stenram seeks to unsettle the original functions of our society’s familiar photographic genres.

FORMAT13 is the sixth edition of the biennale festival, presented by QUAD and the University of Derby which takes place from 8th March until 7th April 2013.

In a programme which promises to be the biggest and most ambitious yet, an exciting line-up of exhibitions will take place in QUAD and throughout Derby, alongside events for everyone for those just interested in Photography to professional Photographers.

With Joe Ford.

In this session Joe will teach you the basics of how the technique works and give you a brief summary of its history and use. You will then create a photosensitive cyanotype print which you expose with a choice of objects (photogram), an A4 acetate negative or a paper print. By the end of the session you will have made a cyanotype print to take home and understood the printing process.

Photojournalists bear witness at the front line of human experience. But when does photojournalism become exploitative?

Photography Masterclasses – Pinhole Camera

This session will be focused on understanding the basics of how the technique works and a brief history of its use followed by creating your own basic pinhole camera, exposing a piece of paper and developing the print. By the end of the session you will leave with a positive photographic print and a pinhole camera.

Network event with Ian Beesley

We're very pleased to welcome the leading social documentary photographer Ian Beesley to talk about his recent book, The Drift. It's an atmospheric, stirring and informative study of life working in a coal mine, picturing the darkness, the claustrophobia, and the physicality of the work. There will be copies of the book on sale.
