Observe Bolton

Aged 14 – 23 and interested in developing your creative skills? Observe Bolton is an exciting new project for young people.

Learn the art of urban observation on this ten week course with Caroline Edge every Saturday from 11th May. You will have the opportunity to develop skills in photography, audio recording, editing and blogging whilst discovering Bolton’s secret life. If you are an independent thinker, aspiring artist or writer, then this project is for you. The project is inspired by Mass Observation's 1930's study of life in Bolton.

Photo-Forum May 2013, London

Photo Forum this month plays host to Jordi Ruiz Cirera and Laura Pannack, two photographers whose works have been garnering attention far and wide. Both photographers will be speaking about their work and discussing their experiences building a relationship with often camera-shy subjects.

A Panorama of Preston's Past

There are a range of exciting events taking place over the next couple of months as part of the major, Preston People Panorama exhibition currently on display in the Museum of Lancashire.

On Sunday 28 April, a talk, 'A Panorama of Preston's Past', will take place. This talk by Dr Keith Vernon, Head of History at the University of Central Lancashire, will explore some of the stories and histories behind a selection of the photographs for a personal view of Preston’s past – refreshments provided.

London Sliver Gelatin Dry Plate Workshop

This two day workshop with Jonathan Stead will cover all aspects of the contemporary Silver Gelatin Dry Plate technique - both glass plate negatives and Ambrotypes.

The course will be run from Double Negative Darkroom - one of London's best equipped darkrooms.

Black and White Photography Workshop

Learn how to take photographs, develop film and print photos with Margaret Banton, an experienced photographer with several years practice in technical scientific and medical photography, alongside portrait and wedding photography.

The cost of the course is £80.00 for a 12 hour course over two days, 6 places available.

Materials will be provided, if possible bring your own cameras.

Seeing Photographically

How we translate the three-dimensional world into an interesting two-dimensional picture is the art of photography? It is called seeing photographically or camera vision. To orchestrate all those often complex elements in front of the camera into an arresting and personally relevant image can be a problem, even for the experienced practitioner.

Join The North East Photography Network at The Hatton Gallery to meet John Darwell to discuss his current exhibition 'After Schwitters.'

The 'Reading Group' format invites informal discussion, reflections and refreshments.
John Darwell has travelled to sites particularly relevant to the life and work of Kurt Schwitters including Elterwater, the Isle of Man, Hanover and Norway to produce his own photographic responses to these places. The results are exhibited at The Hatton Gallery until 20 April 2013.

Preston People Panorama Exhibition Tour

The exhibition features over 70 panoramic photographs of Preston based groups and organisations, captured by award-winning photographer, Jan Chlebik.

Who decides who is represented in a nation’s gallery?
Who are the protectors of these representations?

Caroline Douglas will be displaying a portrait of her great-grandfather in The Library of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery (level 2). He worked as a Gallery Attendant at the Scottish National Galleries in the 1930s and 40s & 50s.
