Artist Talk: Mandy Barker

20 February 2020, 19:30 to 20:30

At first glance, Barker’s photographs appear to show sea creatures and corals suspended deep beneath the sea, but closer inspection reveals a more disturbing reality. From footballs to fishing nets, cotton buds to coffee cup lids, Barker highlights the everyday plastic items now commonplace in our oceans and seas.

Hear more about Our Plastic Ocean at our talk with Mandy Barker at Waterside, Thursday 20th February at 7:30pm.

Publication Launch: Of Flesh and Stone

15 February 2020, 14:00 to 15:30
Manchester

Join photographer Mario Popham and artist Tom Baskeyfield as they launch their publication, Of Flesh and Stone. The collaborative project, which examines the legacy of slate extraction in North Wales and its connection to England’s first industrial city, was first exhibited in the Granada Gallery spaces at HOME in 2018.

An evening looking at photography and place. Three artists with diverse approaches will discuss their work about the interaction between landscape and experience, answering the question ‘How does our individual perception alter our interpretation of a place?’.

What’s changing in your life, and how are you coping? What’s on your photographic radar? What does photography need? What can Redeye do?  Please come and share your thoughts and concerns at one or more of our discussion events.

Framework

27 January 2020, 11:00 to 24 March 2020, 17:00

A professional development programme in Manchester for artists, makers and photographers. Collaboratively developed and delivered by a-n, Castlefield Gallery, Manchester Craft & Design Centre and Redeye, the Photography Network. Four full-day sessions will be led by arts sector experts, focusing on core business skills: writing, pitching, project management and promotion.

Get informal advice on your career or work during 1-1s with experts in the industry. At this month's critique, we welcome guest panellists Clarissa Corfe, Relationship Manager in Visual Art at Arts Council England, and photographer and lecturer Ben McDonnell in addition to Redeye's Director Paul Herrmann.

‘Photographs from Another Place’ presents a found archive alongside contemporary images, taken in response to the people and places found through examination of the archive. Join us for a tour of the exhibition and to hear Alan discussing his process of working with the archive.

The second in our series of Come and Chat events will be based around the topics of Training and Access.

1. Access, anxiety, diversity, difficulty: how can we make sure the full range of voices is heard in photography? Which ones get squeezed out?

2. Training and academia: what is the role of universities and independent training organisations? Does the growth of academic practice have unintended consequences?
