Archiving Through Change

13 November 2020, 13:15 to 14:15

Originally envisaged as a physical exchange between UK and Hong Kong visual arts networks, Peer to Peer has responded to the Covid-19 pandemic to become an online space where meaningful exchange can happen and partnerships and relationships can be forged. This panel discusses the changing role of archives, comparing the approaches in Hong Kong and the UK, and considers what the archives and collections of the future might look like.

Nilupa Yasmin is an artist and educator known for her beautiful, intricately constructed artworks and large-scale installations. The weaving of photographs is core to her practice, and in this workshop she will talk through her use of the process and how it shaped her work, followed by a demonstration of the weaving technique.

Student and graduation panel session: Where now?

Paul Herrmann and a group of mentors from across the image-making industry will come together to give quick-fire advice to those who have just graduated (or who are still studying) and are wondering what options there are to progress their careers in light of the recent global upheaval. The panellists will invite their audience to think creatively and adapt their mindset to a working environment that while challenging, could also offer some very different opportunities.

Getting Your Ducks in a Row

15 September 2020, 18:00 to 19:15

Getting the business side of your practice organised is one of those tasks that always seems to slip down the to-do list. But not doing so, and not following up when your work gets misused, can be costly. Has your work ever been reproduced without your permission? Or has a client ever made more of your work than was agreed? And why when challenged do so many people say 'But it's only a photo'? This event will give you the skills and knowledge to understand when and how to push back and demand fair payment for your images.

An overview and discussion concerning the ethical challenges and issues facing photography today, with Savannah Dodd, founding director of the Photography Ethics Centre. Free and all welcome.

Redeye's Rethink Sessions aim to help photographers and artists navigate and adapt to the COVID-19 crisis; to reprioritise, and find new ideas and income during the pandemic and beyond.

The COVID-19 pandemic has fundamentally changed our daily lives. Moving forwards we know how effectively we can collectively adapt and reprioritise; should we and how we can apply this to the climate crisis?

For the next Rethink Session Phil Korbel, social entrepreneur and co-founder of  The Carbon Literacy Project, will join the discussion. We will look at how artists can get more actively involved; make their own arts practice carbon neutral; and use visual communication skills to spread the message. Can we make a positive impact on the planet an integral part of this ‘new normal’?
