Socially-Engaged Practices Today - Symposium

The North East Photography Network symposium seeks to explore some of the photographic and artistic strategies developed by current practitioners in varied contexts of social engagement, collaboration and participation.

Such strategies will be explored in a series of presentations and dialogues, involving artists, curators and audiences.

On Tuesday May 15th 2012, the Aday.org (www.aday.org) initiative will invite the entire world to participate in the largest and most comprehensive photographic documentation of a single day in human history. Whether an amateur with a mobile phone camera or a professional photographer, Aday.org asks anyone – and everyone – in possession of one of the world’s estimated one billion digital cameras to document their experiences of the day: uploading their images in order to create a visual archive of our lives today.

Creative Exposures

The group is open to photographers using film or digital, with an emphasis on experimental techniques.

Denis Thorpe Talk

As a Guardian photojournalist between 1974 and 1996, Denis Thorpe was well placed to record a period of upheaval in the British political and cultural landscape.

From reportage of the miners’ strike and Strangeways riot to celebrity portraiture and travelogues, he captured the essence of the age. Author of ‘A Long Exposure’ 100 years of Guardian Photography in Manchester.

The talk is free to BIPP members, and £5 for non-members.

The workshop includes expert tuition on how to get the most from your camera. Move from auto to manual in one day with professional tips and settings enabling you to shoot completely manually.

Full notes and delicious Earth Cafe lunch included. You will need a DSLR.

Includes a demonstration plus a practice session in the Northern Quarter, and review of images.

This is a special performance piece with video and projections, suggested by the text for The Unseen Eye: Photographs from the Unconscious (Thames & Hudson 2011), a book based on WM Hunt’s many years of collecting from his early days as an actor to his more recent years as a dealer, teacher, writer and fundraiser.

Hunt is known for his wit and irreverence, his eye and his often larger than life personality. He lives in New York.

The performance will be followed by a book signing.

National Photography Symposium 2012

The National Photography Symposium explores the most critical and talked-about subjects for photography and photographers. Now in its fourth year, it's strongly recommended for anyone interested in the development of photography in the UK.

In 2012 it takes place in collaboration with World Photo London at and around Somerset House, Strand, London WC2R 1LA.
