Join us at Open Eye Gallery for an evening with Stephen King and Natalie Wardle, two photographers exploring gender, identity and sexuality.
To kick off the event, recent graduate Natalie Wardle will give a short talk on her recent work, Control Pants Symphony, an exploration into 'shapewear' (garments that are designed to mould and shape the female body). This piece is currently on display as part of Modern History Vol II.
Stephen King will then present Dry Your Eyes Princess, a unique photography project in which King has photographed trans* military veterans from across the UK, exploring the intersection between gender identity and military service. This project is the first of its kind examining trans* veterans’ experience of service in the Armed Forces.
The event will finish with a Q&A and an open session where attendees are encouraged to meet with other photographers, and share their work.
This event coincides with Open Eye Gallery's current exhibition Zanele Muholi: Vukani/Rise.
About Stephen King:
Stephen King (b.1975) is an award winning social documentary and portrait photographer. Upon graduating from a photography HND at the Bournemouth and Poole College of Art and Design in 1997 he co-founded Document Magazine spending the following 10 years undertaking assignments in the editorial sector. In 2007 he attained an MA in photography from the University of Chester and went freelance to focus upon a personal practice and teaching. The projects and commissions he undertakes often focus upon our relationships to physical and social space along with notions of ownership and belonging. Stephen also lecturers on the B.A(hons) Photography course at St Helens College for The University of Bolton.

Natalie Wardle is a recent graduate of the BA Photography course at Manchester School of Art. Her project Control Pants Symphony is currently on display at The Atkinson as part of Modern History Vol. II curated by Lynda Morris.
