The final two career development workshops in Redeye's series look at the different ways you can get your work out and seen in public - through exhibiting, publishing in print, and online.
This one concentrates on exhibitions and galleries, and features two of the UK's leading speakers in this area: Anne McNeill, director of Impressions Gallery, Bradford; and Laura Noble, director of LA Noble Gallery in London.
Exhibiting is a great way to get your work to an audience, but unfortunately everyone else thinks so too! Many photographers investigate the idea of exhibiting but retreat, baffled by the gallery system in the UK.
How do galleries choose which work to show, how do you build a relationship with a gallery, and what are your alternatives for exhibiting?
This workshop is about demystifying the exhibiting process. It explores:
- How private and public galleries work in the UK and abroad
- Looking for places to exhibit, and negotiating for the use of the space
- Festivals, open submissions and group shows
- Organising yourself as an exhibiting photographer or artist
- Planning an exhibition, making the best use of any available space
- Designing shows, selecting, printing, sequencing and juxtaposing work
- Framing and hanging, openings, catalogues, publicity and security
- Alternative exhibition spaces, in the public realm and on urban screens
- Pricing prints, and deciding on whether and how to limit the edition of each print.
The workshop is recommended for anyone who is interested in exhibiting.
Presenters:
Anne McNeill has been Director of Impressions Gallery in Bradford since 2000. The gallery opened in 1972, as one of the first not-for-profit photography galleries in Europe, and is now recognised as one of the leading contemporary photography galleries in the UK. Between 2005 and 2007 she was responsible for building its brand new space in Bradford. McNeill began her career in 1984, as a darkroom worker at the radical gallery Camerawork, London. In 1994 she set up the commissioning agency Photoworks. She was Artistic Director of Photo 98, the UK Year of Photography and is co-founder of Ways of Looking, the UK's newest photography festival. McNeill is the editor of numerous books, such as Continental Drift: Europe Approaching the Millennium (1998), the work of Trish Morrissey: Seven Years (2004) and Front (2009), most recently Evidence (2011). www.impressions-gallery.com
Laura Noble is the director of LA Noble Gallery, London. She is known as a collector and author of The Art of Collecting Photography. She lectures at the Sotheby’s Institute, Westminster University and also in galleries and museums worldwide on collecting and professional practice.
