Look11 exhibiting artist talks about his new exhibition at the Bluecoat ‘Rezz’ and the role that new social media devices can take in the presentation of portraiture. Rezz is an interactive photography project discussing the ways in which we interact both online and offline. It asks the question whether social media helps or hinders our ability to interact with each other. The project achieves this through the use of portraits of random strangers taken on the streets of Liverpool with an iPhone. These portraits are embedded in the real world and the virtual world for people to discover and interact with through a use of the location app Gowalla.

Here directly from Look11 Artistic Director Stephen Snoddy & Exhibiting artist Jill Jennings about their responses to the ‘Troubles’ in Northern Ireland. Stephen Snoddy talks about his curatorial approach to presenting the photography from 4 Northern Irish Photographers in including Paul Seawright’s Conflicting Accounts, Donovan Wylie’s British Watchtowers, Work from 80’s and 90’s by Victor Sloan and Jill Jinnings ‘Restricted Access’. Look11 asks the question ‘Can photography be a call to action in the search for meaning in Northern Ireland’s difficult past of two sides, loyalist and protestant and nationalist and catholic’.

Jill Jennings also offers an artist’s talk and Q&A session about her project ‘Restricted Access’ documenting The Maze/ Long Kesh Prison in Northern Ireland.

Join John Darwell for a talk about his new work ‘Dogs in Cages’ commissioned by the Bluecoat for Look11. To date seven monographs of his work have been published including Legacy: Inside the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone (Dewi Lewis Publishing 2001), Dark Days (Dewi Lewis 2007) and Committed to Memory (A twenty five year retrospective, Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery, 2007). He has exhibited widely both in the UK and internationally including shows in Italy, Mexico, The Netherlands and the United States and his work is included in several key permanent collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Victoria and Albert Museum, London; National Museum of Photography, Film and Television, Bradford. Darwell’s ‘Dogs in cages series’ forms part of the Bluecoat’s group show ‘Confined’.
