Lebanon born photographic artist Walid Raad, with his project The Atlas Group, a fifteen year documentation of the contemporary history of Lebanon, has won the £30,000 Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 07. He was presented with the cheque at The Photographers' Gallery, London, on 21st March, by Nicholas Glass from Channel 4 News.
The prize is awarded to one of a shortlist of four photographers; the criterion for inclusion is a significant contribution to European photography in the past year. The others on the shortlist were Anders Peterson, Fiona Tan, And Phillippe Chancel, who gave a recent Redeye talk at Open Eye Gallery.
Previous winners of this prize include Andreas Gursky, Joel Sternfeld, Luc Delahaye, Boris Mikhailov, Anna Gaskell, Rineke Dijkstra and Richard Billingham. more...
