September News Roundup

HEREFORD PHOTOGRAPHY FESTIVAL & CONFERENCE

For seventeen consecutive years, the Hereford Photography Festival has presented a broad range of quality international photography. Under the directorship of Paul Wombell, who was recently appointed, the festival will open on Saturday 30th September until Saturday 28th October. The whole thing takes place in a lovely part of the world and the Festival is known for its minimum of fuss and maximum attention to photography, so is well worth a visit.

Much of the work from the festival's recent publication, So Now Then, will be exhibited. The book features an extensive range of contemporary photography from key international documentary photographers working today, nominated by a number of eminent figures working in photography. A One-Day International Conference on Tuesday 10th October (9.30-17.30) at Hereford's Courtyard Centre for the Arts will review ideas proposed in So Now Then. Chaired by Paul Wombell, speakers will include Shelby Lee Adams, Simon Norfolk, Weng Peijun, Paul Shambroom, Michael Wesely and David Campany, artist and Reader in Photography at the University of Westminster and contributor to So Now Then. SEVEN AGES CONFERENCE

Photographic Representations of Transition and Change from Birth to Death

October 26th - 9.45 am - 5.30 pm, Newport Riverfront Arts Centre. Confirmed Speakers: Russell Roberts, Wendy Ewald, Rineke Dijkstra, Larry Sultan and Julian Germain.

Seven Ages is a survey of contemporary photographers who take on the larger themes and issues of documenting life through photography. These photographers have successfully recorded different stages of life, from childhood to old age, by adopting incisive and inventive strategies to portray psychological and social change through single or narrative series of images, modified images, and text. In so doing, they have shown how photography might represent the key transitions in life in dynamic ways, providing a contemporary notion of what it is like to grow up, grow old, and die.

Prices: Full - £40; Concessions - £10; UWN Students Only - £5.00. Tickets are available from Riverfront Arts Centre, tel: 01633 656757.

Villa Mona - a proper kind of house by Marjolaine Ryley
Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art, Fawcett St, Sunderland, SR1 1RE
9th -23 September 2006
Book launch: Thursday 21 September 6:00 - 8:00pm

Marjolaine Ryley's photographs are intimate, psychologically charged portraits of domestic spaces, which explore our experience of family relationships and the way in which we experience them as tied to place. Villa Mona is the name of the family house on the Belgian coast that her family have a long association with. The series of photographs here create a portrait of the house and its current and previous occupants, quietly observing the traces of human presence - the residues of past lives - that have accrued there.
