Have you ever been involved with a photographic studio, in particular its archive? Submissions are now open for papers for a one-day symposium at QUAD, Derby in April 2017. The symposium is being presented to coincide with the exhibition People, Places, and Faces: the W. W. Winter’s Archive, curated by Greg Hobson, to be shown at Derby Museum during Format 2017. The symposium coincides with the 150th anniversary of Winter’s Studio which has been in operation at 45 Midland Road, Derby in a purpose built photographic studios since 1867.

The symposium aims to bring together a range of people working on studio archive projects including professional archivists, curators, artists, and volunteers. The event will explore a range of studio archive projects in and beyond the UK. It aims to explore the ways in which studio archives are being mapped and preserved and how we assess their importance in the history of photography and social and cultural history as a whole. It also aims to develop a network to share skills, knowledge, and experience among those working in this field. Studio portraiture has played an important part in the lives of the British public, spanning, and documenting, the whole social, ethnic and economic make-up our diverse communities, from the 19th onwards. Studio photographers have also recorded buildings, social events, products, and places of interest. They are interested in papers which deal with all forms of studio archives and which describe and discuss the planning, funding, organisation and outcomes of archive projects.

Submissions are now open for 20-minute papers. Abstracts should not be more than 350 words.

Abstracts should be sent to Pete James at this link. All proposals will be peer-reviewed by a steering group. Speakers will be notified by 20th January 2017 if their paper has been accepted.
