Tate Liverpool is launching a new programme for artists living and working in the north west of England (Cheshire, Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Merseyside), offering the opportunity for one selected artist or artist collective to have their work represented at the internationally renowned art museum in spring 2021.
They invite artists to respond to this open call for a new commission or exhibition of new or existing work. The selected artist will work closely with Tate Liverpool staff throughout an 18-month period between November 2019 and March 2021 to develop a presentation of their work in Spring 2021 (exact dates TBC), in either the ground floor Wolfson gallery or part of the 4th-floor galleries. The exhibition or project will be free and open to all our visitors.
The artist will receive a fee and production/presentation budget of up to £30,000 and will have the opportunity to spend time with Tate Liverpool staff across Curatorial, Learning, Development, Communications and Art Handling as required, in support of their artistic development and project planning. A schedule will be agreed with the artist depending on their other commitments.
Tate Liverpool is the most visited gallery of modern and contemporary art outside of London, showing the Tate Collection alongside ambitious temporary exhibitions. This new initiative forms part of a wider desire to build on Tate Liverpool’s continued commitment to the region’s artists and to improve the representation of artists practising in the north west of England.
Applicants should be able to demonstrate a serious commitment to their practice, evidenced in a strong body of work. They should have at least 5 years exhibiting experience. Applicants must currently be based in the north west of England in order to be eligible for consideration.
Individual artists or artist collectives are invited to submit draft proposals by 10 September 2019, by submitting a filled-out application form via email: opencall@tate.org.uk. This must include a CV and artistic statement describing the following:
1) Rationale: description of the concept for proposed project or exhibition, including visual material (up to 10 images of existing work with titles and dimensions or renders/sketches of proposed new work, and/or 8 mins of moving image
2) Specification: What are the key components of the exhibition? How might it be produced? If not at Tate, what would be the ideal location? How would the exhibition look in the space? In case of a socially engaged project – who is the audience or participants? What is your experience of this kind of practice?
3) What kind of support from teams within Tate Liverpool would you benefit from?
4) Research and implementation: please set out a plan and timetable for how you will research and develop the exhibition, including the production of any new work.
5) Proposed allocation of artist fees, expenses, materials and production budget to a total of £30,000.
