As part of the exhibition We Face Forward and the "Raw Social" series, Whitworth Art Gallery is hosting a free talk by Ghanaian photographer James Barnor.
Born in 1929 in Accra, James Barnor started his photographic career in 1949 with a makeshift studio in the district of Jamestown, and built a career as a portrait photographer and photojournalist. Ten years later, he moved to the UK to study photography at Medway College of Art, and worked for a decade as a fashion photographer in London during the swinging 60s, before returning to Ghana for a further 24 years, eventually returning to London.
The Portrait Salon will take place after this talk.
