John Walmsley talk at the RPS

29 April 2021, 18:15 to 19:45

This Engagement talk features Photographer,  John Walmsley.

John Walmsley has worked as a freelance documentary photographer since leaving Art School in 1968.  His final year project on A.S. Neill and his democratic school, Summerhill, was published by Penguin Books in 1969.  He’s the author or joint author of 15 books and his work has been published in 1,000+ books worldwide.  His work is also held at the National Portrait Gallery, the National Art Library at the V&A, the V&A Museum of Childhood, the Tate Britain Library and la Bibliothèque Nationale de France.

In the 70s he lived in an Arts Centre with potters, painters, musicians, dancers, film-makers and sculptors whilst also being a part-time lecturer at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London.

Mostly he photographs ordinary people doing what they do.  If something interests him, he’ll try to photograph it, taking however long it needs and not knowing how it would develop or how it might be published.  These projects are almost always self-financed.
