This photo report narrates the observations of Mexican photographer Narciso Contreras as he travelled through the complex tribal society of post-Gaddafi Libya from February to June 2016, documenting the unfolding humanitarian crisis in which illegal migrants, refugees and asylum seekers are at the mercy of militias who exploit them in a tightly organised trafficking market.
The purpose of the Carmignac Photojournalism Award is to support a photojournalist in undertaking a photographic and investigative assignment exploring zones where human rights and freedom of speech are violated. The Award provides the laureate with €50,000 to enable them to go into the field, as well as a fully-financed monograph and a touring exhibition of the project.
