Stasis brings together works from three recent series by the Danish artist Trine Søndergaard exploring stillness and introspection.
There is a painterly quality to her work, with subtle use of light, colour, perspective and composition to enhance dramatic effect. The artist also combines contemporary and traditional elements in a manner that both seduces the viewer and confounds their expectations. Stasis will be Søndergaard’s first solo UK exhibition.

This year’s Spender scholar, Richard Gaskill, has been exploring the interwoven layers of emotion that lie between sports, spectacles and the Boltonians who observe these events.

Marking ten years since the start of the 2003 Iraq War, a new photographic display by award-winning British war photographer Sean Smith reveals the collision of two worlds where local civilians and military personnel were forced to co-exist.
Smith documented the war in Iraq for The Guardian newspaper and these photographs were taken before, during and after the Iraq War. They will be exhibited in two displays, one inside and the other outside IWM North. More →

America by Car documents Lee Friedlander's countless wanderings around the United States over the past decade.
Friedlander succeeds in giving the classical theme of the American road trip his own very original twist, using the cars' windscreens and dashboards to frame the familiar American landscape.
