Join us at this member-led event at the opening night of Guille Ibanez’ exhibition Tierra Santa at the Instituto Cervantes for a talk and discussion about the culture behind his photography.
Tierra Santa offers a window into the religious and cultural celebrations of Spain. The fiestas represent the essence of the country - a celebration of its culture and heritage, which highlights each region’s uniqueness within the context of a profoundly diverse (and often divided) country. This body of work is an exploration of the theatre of religion and the way that people construct elaborate mythologies and folklore around their faiths and beliefs, often translated through rich cultural iconography that is passed down from generation to generation.
Who is it for?
This event is for anyone who is interested cultural traditions, social documentary, capturing unusual subjects or working in communities. It's perfect for photographers or artists looking to get an insight into different projects, or those who are interested in the medium and are looking for some visual inspiration.
Born in Madrid but drawn to Manchester, where he now lives, Guille Ibanez is a photographer whose work focuses on culture, tradition and human interaction. Originally trained as a cinematographer, Guille still combines professional film and video work with his passion for photography. The tension between the moving and the still image is at the heart of Guille's work, and his pictures are often referred to as being like frames from a film. Religion and human faith play a major part in Guille’s work and he develops long term projects in his home country of Spain whilst also working in the UK and Asia. Guille’s photography has been shown in numerous festivals around Europe and America and he was recently a finalist at the prestigious Moscow International Foto festival.
18:30 until 20:00 on 31 January 2018. The exhibition opens at 18:00. The formal discussion is expected to finish around 19:30.
Instituto Cervantes, 326-330 Deansgate, Campfield Avenue Arcade, Manchester M3 4FN.
