Redeye Email Update - December 2009

************

Welcome to the Redeye Email Update - all the news that's fit to print in the world of photography. We'd like to flag up our Spotlight on Working For Free event (details below) on the 15th. It's going to be a great evening - but make sure you book soon - free in advance to Redeye subscribers or £5 on the door if tickets remain. We've added two sessions after the main event, one in particular aimed at photographers on the increasingly important skill of presentation. Before we get to the good stuff, Redeye wishes all our subscribers a very happy Christmas and New Year, along with a huge thank you to our funders, partners and volunteers for their continued support throughout 2009.

SPOTLIGHT ON WORKING FOR FREE
6.30pm, 15th Dec 2009
Free or £5 - see text
Contact, Oxford Road, Manchester, M15 6JA

PANDA and Redeye join forces to discuss the pros and cons of unpaid work; 15th December, 6:30pm. Free to Redeye subscribers

Working for the love but not the money? How to get experience without getting exploited.

This practical panel-led information and networking event is open to anyone working in the arts in the North West. Join us from 6.30pm to 8:30pm (optional networking session from 8:30pm till 9:30pm) on Tuesday 15th December 2009 as our panel of guest speakers examine the pros and cons of working for free in the arts (panel includes Redeye director Paul Herrmann).

The event is FREE for Redeye subscribers and PANDA members if you book in advance. Otherwise £5. Full details here http://www.redeye.org.uk/redeye/eventsdetail.asp?uvarEventID=581

Plus two new taster workshops are added to this event:

Presenting Yourself Workshop: 8.30pm – 9.30pm

An important skill for any creative practitioner is being able to network effectively so that you can develop useful relationships. For photographers, being able to present yourself and your work to potential clients and partners is an essential requirement, but one that is often a source of anxiety. Janet Harrison from Creative Academy will lead a taster workshop on the art of communication designed especially for photographers. Discover how you can build your confidence to make new contacts and sell your services in a clear and natural way. You will also take away ideas for further exercises that you can do to practice and develop your newfound techniques.

Meet the Photographer Workshop: 8.30pm – 9.30pm

Performing arts and photography are highly interdependent and yet often remain very separate. This is a great opportunity for performers to learn from, and exchange with, your fellow artists from the world of photography. Join photographer Ian Tilton for an informal question and answer session where you can find out:
• Where you can find a suitable photographer.
• How to choose the right person and build a good working relationship with them.
• How much a photographer will charge and how they set their rates.
• What to expect from a shoot, either for portfolio or performance shots.
• How you can prepare for a shoot in order to produce the best results.

Both sessions are highly recommended and the event should be great fun as well as packed with useful information.

Networking Session: 8.30pm onwards

Running alongside the workshops and continuing afterwards for those who have been taking part, we’ll be holding a festive social and networking session in the Contact Lounge bar.

Stay and chat with the guest speakers and new contacts from the Spotlight On panel event and workshop sessions and relax over a complimentary glass of mulled wine and a mince pie. The PANDA team will also be there to hear your ideas and suggestions for the Spotlight On programme next year.

There is also the opportunity to pick up a copy of Capture Manchester book at the bargain price of £10 - an ideal stocking filler for those still with shopping to do.

To book

There is no additional charge to attend either of the optional taster workshops but places are strictly limited. To book your place contact Rachel Morton on 0161 274 0626 or email rachel@panda-arts.org.uk and indicate which workshop you would like to attend.

There is no additional charge to attend the festival social and networking session and no need to book – we’ll just see you there!

Jem Southam
Clouds Descending
Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery
12 December 2009 – 28 February 2010

The Cumbrian coast played an important role in the work of LS Lowry who explored the landscape from bases in Whitehaven and Aspatria, where he stayed with Sheila Fell. In 2007, photographer Jem Southam was commissioned by The Lowry in Salford to make his own response to the Cumbrian coastline. Retracing Lowry’s steps, Southam walked the 50 mile stretch of coast from Maryport to Barrow-in-Furness and produced a series of photographs that focus on the relationship between the landscape and manmade remnants of the region’s industrial past – including harbours, plants, chimneys and slag heaps.

Clouds Descending presents Jem Southam’s series of photographs alongside a selection of paintings by LS Lowry and contributions from each of Southam’s fellow walkers.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

If you have anything you want to put in this update and reach thousands photographers then send it to info@redeye.org.uk.

Please send your news in either MS Word format or as a text document (eg as a .DOC or .TXT file). Extracting and reformatting text from HTML, JPGs and PDFs or other attachments is extremely time-consuming for us. So keep it simple - dates, times, fees and a clear description of your event or opportunity in plain text.

You can also submit news items at the website www.redeye.org.uk. When submitting, please remember to provide contact details and opening and closing dates for any exhibitions.

Updates usually appear at the start of each month, so try and get your items to us by the last working day of each month for inclusion. It’s a lot easier for us if you can submit info by email or web - postal info tends to get delayed and we can't always include it. We can’t guarantee inclusion of any item. Things sometimes slip through the net.
